The Joys Of Stream Trout Fishing

Many people have stream trout fishing for a hobby as streams are usually more accessible than other fishing locations. Aside from the joys of stream trout fishing, another reason why people do so is that they want to enjoy the scenery to relax and unwind.

One beauty of stream trout fishing is that a stream can contain many types of trout. You need not go far to catch brown trout, rainbow trout, and book trout as there is a big possibility that you will find them in just one location. Just imagine the relaxing sound of stream water and the joy of catching nice-sized trout of a different variety for dinner.

To catch some trout when fishing a stream, you must find the right balance between the weight of your line and the size of your rod. You can experiment on various combination’s to find the right one.

When stream trout fishing, the most effective bait to use are live baits especially live worms. If you are using worms as your bait, it is best to use gang hooks as they are the best way to present worms in the most natural way to a trout. When looking for trout in a stream, they could be found in a lot of places. Some may be hiding under the debris in the water while some could be near floating wood or near rocks.

There will be times when the water level in streams could get high. High water levels could really put additional challenge to stream trout fishing but there are ways to fish for trout in this situation.

What you should do is to fish close to crevices, backwash’s, stream edges, and other pockets where trout usually seek refuge when the water is high and the current is strong. You can use a chunk of meat as bait so that trout can easily smell it. With a strong water current, it should be tied with a weight to keep the line in place.

When fishing in a stream with high water level, you should use a longer rod. Rod length of 7 ½ to 9 feet would be your best bet. You can match it with a larger spinning reel to balance it out. If you are fishing in a pocket near the shore of the stream where you are, you need not cast your line. Just let you line drop directly into the pocket.

If you find a promising crevice or backwash, try dropping your line a few inches into the water first. After five seconds or so and with no bite, lift your rod slowly and move it six inches farther out into the stream. If no trout is still biting, repeat this process until you reach the deepest pocket. Just make sure that your line can withstand the current.

You would need a lot of patience. If you’ve been trying to catch trout in a pocket for about five minutes or so, you may try the next pocket for trout. If indeed you were successful in hooking a trout, be ready to chase the fish down the stream in case it plays tug of war with you. You can also have a net handy for this kind of situation.

Fishing lures are not hard to make provided you have a bit of patience and creativity. So when those bad weather days come your way you’ll find that making fishing lures at home is a great way to consume your time. Especially if your an angler who enjoys all aspects of fishing.

Here are some simple and easy suggestions for making your lures at home from materials that you can purchase inexpensively or already have at home.

Spoons

Spoons, as the name suggests, can be actually made from various sizes and shapes of spoons. Try going to a second had store and buying a collection of various sizes of metal measuring spoons. Using a hand torch or a propane torch, heat the metal spoon part, then using a hammer or pliers gently flatten the spoon until you have a uniform shape.

After it has completely cooled, the handle from the spoon can be cut off. Using a small sized drill bit, drill a hole in the top (handle) and bottom end of the shaped spoon. Attach a swivel and a leader to the top hole and a hook to the bottom hole. The spoon can be painted with any type of metal paint or can be left silver. Additional patterns, stripes or even more involved designs can be added.

Minnows and Crankbaits

Crankbaits and minnow forms can be made from simple pieces of doweling or even a small piece of plank. Trace a pattern using your favorite crankbait body, or just be creative. The key is to keep the shape of the crankbait body equal on both sides to make it move through the water with the correct movement.

All that you will need for making fishing lures at home out of wood is a file, skill saw or small hand saw, sandpaper, epoxy glue and hooks and a swivel. With the dowel positioned flat, cut the desired length of the body. Find the center line down the “back” of the body and draw it on the wood, this will allow you to keep the shape in balance. Start sanding the shape from the center point, making the fish shape tapering from the front to the back.

When the shape is sanded to the correct form, cut a drill two or more small holes in the center line of the belly and insert the treble hook in the back hole and a weight in the front hole. Epoxy both into the holes and allow to completely set. If your crank-bait is going to have a lip, in the front bottom of the lure cut a slot and insert a commercial lip using the epoxy again. If required, attach a tail after attaching the swivel.

Finally, using your lucky or favorite colors paint the crank-bait. Making fishing lures can be an activity for the kids to get involved in as well as the adults. Young kids may have trouble making fishing lures because of the small size of the materials, but they will enjoy being involved in the painting and finishing.

Nothing seems to get a true trout fishing aficionado going like the subject of trout fishing flies. It’s a hotly debated topic between fishing “purists” and the casual trout fisherman.

Trout flies are those funny-looking little lures that are made to resemble bugs – to a trout. Trout love to eat bugs, in their adult configuration and also their adolescent stage, which is called larvae. There are many kinds of aquatic insects, and there are literally thousands of trout flies tied to mimic them.

As mentioned, aquatic insects, a favorite trout food, have different stages in their development. Many of them start out life as a larva which lives underwater, attached to a log, rock or some other object in the wild. There is a whole class of flies that is made to resemble these larvae.

Larvae flies are most often wet flies, as they are fished underwater where the larvae spend most of their time. Since a larvae is not very colorful or equipped with wings and other embellishments, the larvae flies are sort of plain as well. You’ll see a lot of brownish, caterpillar-looking flies in this category.

Wet flies have more in common with dry flies in that they are much fancier and more closely resemble adult insects. They are meant to be fished underwater, so they will need to be fairly rugged to withstand the pull of current in a stream or river.

Wet flies are fished in such a way that the fly is presented in front of a fish holding in an underwater location. The fisherman casts the fly and manipulates his line to cause the fly to travel through pools and other areas of deeper water in an enticing way to attract a fish to eat it. A fish that cannot be tempted to rise to a surface insect may bite at a fly that is presented right in front of him.

Dry flies are fished along the surface of the water. These flies are often made to resemble the adult version of aquatic insects, with tails, wings and other ornamentation. Dry flies are often floated down a stream with the current and entice a trout to come out of hiding and strike the fly at the surface. This accounts for the exciting and popular “hit” when a trout will leap out of the water to grab what he thinks is an insect.

Dry flies are often made to “match the hatch”. This means that the fly tier attempts to tie a fly that mimics the look of the local aquatic insects that are currently hatching into their adult stage and rising to the surface of the water. This is a heavy feeding time for trout, and the fisherman tries to take advantage of this phenomenon by presenting the trout with what it thinks is another local insect.

Of course, all of these techniques and fly types may be combined, depending on local conditions at the water being fished and whatever the fish are biting on at a given time. Trout may switch from one type of prey to another in the course of a day, so the competent fisherman will try different flies until he finds something that works.

Trout fishing flies have also been made to resemble other types of prey. Small bait fish, crayfish, larger insects and even small rodents are all represented as trout flies. Flies are also made that look nothing like any living creature, but are successful at catching fish due to some natural instinct of attraction.

Trout fly tying is an art that has been practice for hundreds of years. There are numerous books on the subject, with some dating back to the 1700′s. There are many established patterns of trout fly, and many be purchased at either sporting goods stores or from professional fly tiers.

There are a few basic tools used to tie your own flies. A fly-tying vise which holds the hook, thread-holding bobbins, scissors, pliers, magnifying glass and proper lighting are all fairly essential. Of course, other tools and implements as desired may be employed by the fly tier.

There is a huge array of fly-tying materials that is used. Everything from hair, fur, yarn and feathers to cork, tinsel, plastic and wire are used to tie flies. The fur and feathers from all kinds of animals are used. To weigh down a fly so that it will sink, brass, glass, lead and other types of wire are employed. Many kinds of synthetic materials are used such as Kevlar, epoxies and silicone’s.

To tie a fly, a hook is clamped in the vise by the barbed end. The various materials are tied on to the shaft of the hook below the eyelet. The various feathers, fur and other items are often tied onto the hook with some sort of thread which is wound around the shaft of the hook.

Flies may be tied according to some existing pattern or type or they may be made up by the individual tier. There are known patterns that have worked for years, so many fishermen will either buy or tie these particular flies. Flies may be purchased for under a dollar to several dollars apiece for the more complicated and popular ones.

You also do away with the inevitable messy hands problem when dealing with live bait. To properly use a spinning lure, you should cast it out and reel it in against the flow of the current, perpendicular to it. This is best for aggravating fish who are not hungry into striking out of aggression.

3. Small Jigs
Small jigs and tube like lures are best for catching trout that you see lazily laying along the bottom of a stream. Using these lures involves applying a great degree of finesse, gently bouncing the lure along the bottom of the stream close to the trout, enticing and tricking them into taking the lure.

4. Fly Fishing
Fly fishing is a very effective method of trout fishing. Fly fishing involves using an entirely different rod, reel and type of lure. You use a heavy line and cast “flies” out, which are very small lures that look like insects. It is the weight of the line that you use to cast. You drift these tiny bug lures made of string and feathers down the stream and past the trout. Trout fishing is a sports fishing suitable for most people. You don’t need a boat, a depth locator, a guide, or any expensive fishing tackle. The first thing to consider is the size of the lure. There are commercials and producers who claim they have a lure or spinner that always works during trout fishing. This is simply incorrect. Trout that only feed on small insects will usually never bite on a big lure. Trout that only feeds on larger prey will almost never bite on a small spinner.

The size of the trout fishing lures you choose must be adapted to several factors. It is essential to adjust your lures to fit your fishing rod. If using a lure that is to light, you will experience short and not very accurate casting. Using a spinner that is too heavy will result in some of the elasticity in the rod being lost. You also need to adjust the size of your lures to the trout you are fishing for. Examine how big the fishes are in the area you will engage in trout fishing, and then choose sizes based on that knowledge.

Finally, you must adjust your fishing tackle to the conditions which applies in the sites where you will engage in trout fishing. Get knowledge about how deep the lake is, as well as how strong currents in the river are before choosing lures and spinners.

Sport Fishing The Pacific Coast Of Costa Rica

Many visitors have traveled to Costa Rica to enjoy the beauty and relaxation of this tropical paradise. Aside from the many pleasant and adventure tours available, there are always the fishing trips. These excursions provide plenty of fun, action and fulfillment to the average person, but many avid anglers have also traveled from far and away to take advantage of the fabulous opportunities provided by this majestic country.

The Pacific coast of Costa Rica has always been the side to choose for visitors because of the popular tourist and surfing towns of Flamingo, Ocotal, Tamarindo and others in the north western region known as Guanacaste.

As other northwestern towns like Playa del Coco and Brasilito became popular, visitors began to move further south and visit Jaco and Quepos in the province of Puntarenas. These towns have now become well known and while roads began to get better, southern Pacific coast towns like Dominical also became popular. Even the extreme southern towns of Golfito, with a new marina on the Golfo Dulce and Puerto Jimenez are well visited by International travelers.

Throughout this coast, you can find some fantastic fishing whether it’s offshore or inshore. There are many species of fish to target while in Costa Rica and the most popular are the species of Billfish like the Pacific Sailfish, Blue Marlin and Black Marlin. These grand trophies of the sea are abundant in these waters and can be caught sometimes in great numbers.

The Pacific Sailfish grows larger than its Atlantic family member and are sometimes seen in groups of five or more in one spot. These acrobatic fish are the number one target of most anglers who try their luck while fishing offshore in the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

While you may be lucky enough to catch several of these fish in one day, it is not unusual to have more than fifteen Sailfish jump or bite during one full day of fishing. We caught twenty seven Pacific Sailfish in one day and all over eighty five pounds.

On the other hand, the Blue Marlin is more difficult to target and usually only seen one at a time. These fish can be quite large and are a prized catch. Some Blue Marlin in this area can weigh over four hundred pounds. The Black Marlin is the most difficult to target and usually caught unexpectedly.

These are known to be the largest of all Billfish and can weigh over five hundred pounds in this area. If the Blue Marlin is a difficult find and considered a gem, the Black Marlin is the diamond that eludes most.

Billfish are known as game fish; therefore all of these beautiful fish are released unharmed to protect the species. These and other pelagic species of fish like Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi-Mahi or Dorado are the most common of the fish caught offshore in these waters.

While trying your luck inshore, there are plenty of choices and opportunities around the rocky coasts and beaches of the Pacific side. The prized Roosterfish, a member of the Jack family, is an incredible fighter and an absolute beauty.

This fish can reach weights of over 70 pounds and is the number one target of most anglers fishing inshore. The Cubera Snapper is yet another great and large fish found all around these shallow waters of the Pacific coast. Amongst other species, you may find the Pacific Sierra Mackerel, Pacific Barracuda, large Pacific Jack Crevalle and several other species of exotic Jacks.

Although the bottom fishing in the Pacific side of this country is not popular amongst the anglers, there are several nice sized species like the Barred Snapper, the Yellow Snapper and others that provide some great action and table fare.

One of the most important reasons why people continue to return to fish the Pacific in this country is due to the large amount of capable yachts and boats that use the latest technological and fishing equipment. Most of the Captains and mates are fluent in English and have the very best of experience fishing these grounds. Many of these boats use only the best rods, reels, hooks, lures, fishing lines and bait.
