Fishing for the biggest fish is a usual topic of conversation among anglers. Freshwater fish can grow fairly large, but they are no competition for saltwater, deep sea fish. Those hardy anglers who venture out into the deep sea in small boats to see what they can catch are truly brave, but only a few can boast of catching really big fish.

The biggest fish the ocean has to offer are sharks. The largest shark is the whale shark. The whale shark has been reported measuring 50 feet long and weigh over 18 metric tons. This is bigger than a grey hound bus or a semi truck and trailer. It is also bigger than most of the boats anglers rent to go out deep sea fishing.

The next largest shark is the basking shark. This shark has been caught weighing over 12 metric tons and 43 feet long. It is the size of a big RV. But the basking shark and the whale shark won’t be caught by anglers unless it is an accident. They are both plankton eaters. They swim through the deep sea with their mouths open collecting plankton as the water filters through their gills. It would be possible to get a hook and line tangled up in their gills, but nothing would be able to bring them in, let alone get them on the boat!

The thresher shark is a huge fish eating shark that is catch able. These sharks have been known to grow 20 feet long and over 1000 pounds. Then there is the great white shark. This fish, which has a bad name in the world, can grow very large. In 1952, off of the coast of Cape Donnington, Australia, a great white was caught weighing 2071 lbs, which is over 1 ton. Then in 1962, off the coast of Long Island, New York, a great white was caught that dwarfed the one from Australia. This fish was 17 and a half feet long and weighed an estimated 4500lbs. That is over 2 and a half tons.

After the sharks, the blue marlin is most likely the biggest fish caught deep sea fishing. The record fish caught at Kona, Hawaii was 1100 lbs. It was caught in 1967. There was another 1100 lb blue marlin caught in 1966 at LeMorne, Mauritius. In the Atlantic Ocean the blue marlin are smaller. In 1956 off of the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico a 756 lb blue marlin was caught. The black sea bass is another large species of fish and it is found all over the Pacific Ocean but there seem to be a large number off of the coast of California. In August of 1956, boats from San Clemente, California, caught a black bass weighing 514 lbs. The wahoo is another deep sea species that can grow large. In 1960, off the coast of Marathon, Florida, there was a Wahoo caught weighing 139 lbs. These are some of the largest fish ever caught in the deep ocean. There maybe others that are as big or bigger because the large fish of the ocean are constantly growing.

The entire salt water surrounding Florida is full of amazing fishing opportunities. Florida is fortunate to have access to Atlantic, Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Each of these bodies of water offer similar, but different type of fishing. Here are a few of the deep sea fishing spots Florida has available.

Along the east central Florida coast is the city of Titusville. Titusville is the base camp for many styles of fishing including deep sea fishing. From Titusville an angler can take a boat out into the Atlantic and fish for Cobia, and Tripletail. The area off Cape Canaveral is teaming with these fish.

Die hard deep sea anglers can sail out into the Atlantic to the east side of the Gulf Stream in search of Yellow Fin Tuna. In these waters fishing for the Yellow Rin is done by trolling using big lures all thorough the area. This is usually a dawn to dusk fishing trip, especially in the late fall, but it is well worth the time spent. The area around Key West is among the best fishing in North America.

There are fun game fish here every day of the year, and the chance of catching something is also good every single day. The reefs offer wonderful year round fishing for Yellowtail Snapper. The wrecks in the area have great Cobia fishing in the winter and Black Fin Tuna fishing in the spring. Late spring through late summer the Dolphin (also known a Mahi) are in the region. Trolling for these beautiful tasty fish is also fun. The Dolphin is a great fighting fish and during this time the water is warm and inviting.

All around Key West in the winter the fishing for Wahoo and Sailfish is great. Trolling for these big fish is a marvelous activity for a winter day. There are even a few Blue Marlins in the region during this time of the year. Key West is also the stopping off point to go to the Dry Tortugas, a group of island about 70 miles west. Through late spring boat trips leave daily to go to the Dry Tortuga area. Fishing in this area is wonderful for Grouper, Snapper, and Kingfish among other smaller species. This is a gorgeous trip and well worth the cost and time.

In the Florida panhandle is the “fishing village” of Dustin. Off of the coast of Dustin is the East Pass which offers the fastest deep water access in the region. Through this pass the coast shelf drop to 100 feet within 10 miles. In these waters the trolling for Wahoo is wonderful. There are also a few Sail Fish in the area depending on the time of year.

The water off of Dustin also has several artificial reefs and natural formations that are home to Gag Groupers, and Red Snappers. However, these fish are only legal to catch in season. The season seems to change from year to year so it’s best to check the current fishing regulations.

These are only a few of the top Florida fishing spots. Florida has so many wonderful places to fish its hard to make a comprehensive list. The best thing is to head down there and try your luck.

Swim Baits:
Swim baits are a great type of bass fishing lure, especially if you are aiming to catch those deep bass that dwell and forage in deeper areas of the water. The swim bait actually allows you to go deeper down the water and fish these deep water bass out. What makes these swim bait lures very effective in catching deep bass is the fact that they resemble a lot like the forage fish that most larger-sized deep bass fishes eat.

Crank Baits:
Crank baits are actually a type of subsurface plugs that are specifically designed to move or wiggle from side to side as you try to retrieve it from the water. This movement will actually attract the bass fish to it. The movement is actually determined based on the width of the lure, and the size of the bill or the lips on the bait. Although you can practically use this type of bait, or any subsurface plug for that matter, at almost any time of the year, it is advisable that you use this when the temperature of the water is just above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Minnow Baits:
Minnow baits are another type of subsurface plugs that are designed to attract bass fish on different depths, from the shallow end to the deeper parts of the water. Minnow baits are actually pretty similar to crank baits, but are just more realistic in how they mimic the look and the movement of real forage fish. This particular bait is best

Jerk Baits:
As the name implies, jerk baits are a type of subsurface plugs that are retrieved in a jerking motion. This means that the bait is tugged and paused for a couple of times in order to attract the bass fish, more specifically those that reside in the deep parts of the water. This is usually a great bait to use during the dead of winter, or the middle of summer.

Before heading out to night fish, make sure that you know the area that you are going to fish. Most lakes have structures just below the surface such as stumps, metal pipes from old boat docks and rocks that can be very dangerous while boating at night.

Knowing the lake and where these hazards are at the current water level will save you on costly repairs to your boat and possibly your life. Safety first, make sure all running lights are working on your boat and that you have good flashlight or head lamp on board before heading out.

Research has shown that bass move into shallow water to feed at night; especially in the warmer months of the year. During the summer daylight hours, most bass seek deep water refuge from the sun and extreme heat, making them more difficult to catch. At night, they feel more secure and tend to roam shallow flats looking for food making them an easier target for bass fishermen.

To gear up for a night trip make sure that you have plenty of lures with a dark color. Black, purple, or blue fleck are great colors to start with. Most bass feed while looking up and can see a dark silhouette at night better than they can a lighter tint. Lures range from slow moving jigs and Texas rigged worms to fast moving spinner-baits and crank-baits.

The key is to make sure that you use a bulky lure that moves a lot of water so that the bass can find it easier in the dark. Some of the best night time lures include a 10 inch Berkley power worm and a ½ ounce spinner-bait with a big Colorado blade. You may also want to add a rattle to your lure as another attraction. If your lake has an abundance of aquatic grass such as hydrilla or milfoil, a slow running, black buzz-bait will produce some startling strikes.

The best areas on a lake to night fish are those that have a lot of shallow brush or rocks next to deeper water. This includes the rip-rap along dams and bridges as well as boat docks. Other key areas are banks that are well lit such as those in a marina or boat docks that have a security light that remains on all night.

Bass will position themselves in the shadows of these lights waiting for a shad, perch or crawfish to swim by. If you are night fishing during a full moon, fish the banks that have moon-light shining on them. Target the shadows that the moon-light makes on the bank behind trees, rocks or brush.

Night-time bass fishing can provide some of the best action all year long. Make sure that you are well prepared and slow down while boating across the lake. Remember to be cautious and to put safety first and you will have an enjoyable experience.

The Black Sea bass is a member of the grouper family, smaller than it’s cousins found is Asia and Australia, it is found on the Eastern seaboard between, Maine, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico with normal catch weights abeing between 7 and 8 pounds at a length of 20 inches.  Reproduction takes place between May and June with tiny eggs that only take one and a half days to hatch.

European Sea bass are very slow growing taking many years to reach full maturity, a 20 year old bass typically weighs around 5 kg with a length of 70 cm.

For a great white water trout fishing time, you will need to:

• Know the season – Trout are seasonal creatures, given to changing their behavior with change in season. Depending on the trout species, trout spawn at different times, for instance the rainbow trout spawns in late spring and early summer as the temperatures rise. Brown trout on the other hand spawn in autumn, while the lake trout is well known to spawn only at night in the fall.

Fishing during spawning periods is amazing as the trout even change colour. Preparation for spawning also means a change in location for most trout species, moving from streams to larger water bodies like lakes or moving upstream. Trout also change their biting patterns with change in season.

Trout fishermen thoroughly enjoy trout fishing as a sport or for more serious economic or research reasons. Knowing exactly where to find the sublimely sweet fish and how to catch them is the fisherman’s joy. This guide will make any aspiring trout fisherman’s dream come true:

First and foremost, trout fishing requires an understanding of trout habits. There are many types of trout including rainbow trout, brown trout and golden trout. Trout prefer moving cool waters and are found in both salty and fresh water bodies, which leads to the reference lake trout, brook trout or sea trout.

Trout can live to an average of 7 years and grow as big as 27 kgs! It is difficult to describe a particular trout species by its color as the same species in a different environment adapts a different color. For instance, ocean trout are silverfish while river trout have brown dots and those found in alpine rivers are greenish.

Trout are predatorial fish, which aggressively look for food when they are hungry, snapping at flies, worms and even smaller fish. They are therefore likely to find even an artificial lure difficult to resist, thinking of it as the real thing.

The Joys Of Stream Trout Fishing

Many people have stream trout fishing for a hobby as streams are usually more accessible than other fishing locations. Aside from the joys of stream trout fishing, another reason why people do so is that they want to enjoy the scenery to relax and unwind.

One beauty of stream trout fishing is that a stream can contain many types of trout. You need not go far to catch brown trout, rainbow trout, and book trout as there is a big possibility that you will find them in just one location. Just imagine the relaxing sound of stream water and the joy of catching nice-sized trout of a different variety for dinner.

To catch some trout when fishing a stream, you must find the right balance between the weight of your line and the size of your rod. You can experiment on various combination’s to find the right one.

When stream trout fishing, the most effective bait to use are live baits especially live worms. If you are using worms as your bait, it is best to use gang hooks as they are the best way to present worms in the most natural way to a trout. You can also use minnow imitations, small spinners, and small spoons are they can be effective in enticing trout.

When looking for trout in a stream, they could be found in a lot of places. Some may be hiding under the debris in the water while some could be near floating wood or near rocks.

There will be times when the water level in streams could get high. High water levels could really put additional challenge to stream trout fishing but there are ways to fish for trout in this situation.

What you should do is to fish close to crevices, backwash’s, stream edges, and other pockets where trout usually seek refuge when the water is high and the current is strong. You can use a chunk of meat as bait so that trout can easily smell it. With a strong water current, it should be tied with a weight to keep the line in place.

When fishing in a stream with high water level, you should use a longer rod. Rod length of 7 ½ to 9 feet would be your best bet. You can match it with a larger spinning reel to balance it out. If you are fishing in a pocket near the shore of the stream where you are, you need not cast your line. Just let you line drop directly into the pocket.

If you find a promising crevice or backwash, try dropping your line a few inches into the water first. After five seconds or so and with no bite, lift your rod slowly and move it six inches farther out into the stream. If no trout is still biting, repeat this process until you reach the deepest pocket. Just make sure that your line can withstand the current.

You would need a lot of patience. If you’ve been trying to catch trout in a pocket for about five minutes or so, you may try the next pocket for trout. If indeed you were successful in hooking a trout, be ready to chase the fish down the stream in case it plays tug of war with you. You can also have a net handy for this kind of situation.

Spoon lures also come in a variety of colors and sizes which give trout anglers more options for baiting their fish. If you are fishing in water that contains a large amount of smaller fish like minnows that trout naturally prey on then the spoon is a great option.

Spinner

Spinners are very common and highly effective when fishing for trout because they closely resemble natural small fish. They typically consist of a small piece of metal connected to another piece of metal, which is connected to a hook. The pieces spin as they move through the water, and this movement really gets the attention of the trout.

The metal “blade” will spin faster or slower depending on its size and weight, and also on the force from the rod. There are many different techniques that can be used with spinners since they come in many varieties, and this versatility allows them to be very critical for trout fishing success.

Flatfish

Flatfish are very useful when fishing for trout in slower moving waters, such as lakes or eddies. They are different from spoons and spinners in their shape and how they move in the water. Flatfish lures wobble to the side and in a very wide manner in order to attract the attention of bigger trout.

They are best paired with some form of weight so they can sink to deeper water where these bigger trout tend to hide. These lures can be very effective if you are trolling in lakes or even for various casting methods in fishing holes.
